Traveling Green: 6 Easy Tips

Travel leads to many great experiences. It can open your mind, provide much needed relaxation, or allow you to indulge in an interest in the perfect location. Unfortunately, between aviation and tours that sometimes negatively impact local communities, travel can have a negative impact on the Earth and the places we so enjoy visiting. Here are some of my tips to begin travelling greener.

1. EAT AND SHOP LOCALLY

Whenever possible, eat locally sourced food and buy locally made souvenirs. Products that were shipped in from elsewhere have a bigger environmental impact, and choosing local products helps support the area’s agriculture and economy. That being said, avoid food or products made from endangered plants and animals!

2. RESEARCH TOURS INVOLVING ANIMALS BEFORE PARTICIPATING

Close encounters are an exciting draw to many destinations, but before you join in it’s important to consider whether or not it’s an ethical choice. Some of these tours, even those that are very popular, cause harm to the animals or communities involved. Do research about the effects of the tours you’re interested in, or ask a travel professional for suggestions on ethical options.

3. CHOOSE GREEN HOTELS

Whenever possible, choose a green hotel. Some hotels are accredited with being “green hotels”, but you can also look into whether or not the hotel is locally staffed, whether they have any recycling programs, and how they work to reduce their energy and water consumption to make responsible hotel choices.

4. WALK, BIKE, OR USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Walking, biking, or using public transportation when possible helps reduce your environmental impact while traveling. It often doubles as a great way to get a better sense of the local culture and community. If you do need to rent a car, choose a hybrid or the smallest car that will suit your needs.

5. BRING REUSABLE BOTTLES

Avoid using excess plastic by bringing your own refillable water bottle. If you’re worried about the safety of your destination’s tap water, you can bring a small water filter with as well.

6. RESPECT THE RULES WHEN TOURING THE OUTDOORS

If your travels involve enjoying the outdoors, do your part to keep the area in the condition it was when you came. Stick to marked hiking trails and maintain a safe distance from wildlife. Make sure to dispose of your trash in proper areas or take it with you. Have fires only where permitted, and always be sure to completely distinguish them.
